Have you ever gone to someone’s Instgram page and said to yourself, “Hey…I want that”?  Well today you’re going to learn how to get those cute little Instagram Highlight Icons on your page.  You’re going to find out what they are, what purpose do they serve and how you can successfully use them in your business to drive traffic and generate sales.

What are Instagram Highlight Icons?

Those little circles beneath someone’s profile are Instragram highlight icons.  What they do is highlight specific stories that you always want page visitors to view when they come to your page. See the pictures below.  These can represent evergreen promos or products that you always would want people visiting your page to have access to.  Because this is an option for you to further enhance your profile and direct visitors to your products or service, you should add it.  One should never miss an opportunity to promote on social media, especially when it’s free.  I must admit that I’ve been sleeping on this method, but no more!  I will be creating my strategy as soon as I finish this post. You Cannot Create a Highlight Before You Create an Instagram Story…

First check out this video on how to create an Instagram Story:

You can add a cover to an existing story or you can create a new story and add a highlight icon to it.  Don’t let the chicken go before the egg.  The first thing you will want to do is create an Instagram Story.  Now this is where you will need to think a little bit.

First and foremost, Instagram stories only last for a 24 hour period. If you post a video as a story it can last for about 14 seconds.  If you post a picture as a story then it lasts only about 8 seconds.  This doesn’t give you a lot of time.  You can add CTA’s or Calls to Action to your stories to make them more powerful and send folks to your website or product pages directly.  But you can only get the swipe up feature if you have business account with more than 10K followers. : (  (No worries…you can work on it).

What kind of stories would you want to add?  The kind of stories that seem to work best are as follows:

  1. Behind the scenes stories.  So if you’re preparing for a big event, it’s good to show folks what’s happening behind the scenes.  If you produce a product, show your customer how it’s made.
  2. Product demos are also good to add to your story.
  3. Tease to new product launches
  4. Promote a new product launch
  5. Promote your next event
  6. Live Blog Your Event
  7. Preview pics from past events to promote future events
  8. Questions and Answers
  9. Big Announcements
  10. Poll Results
  11. Sales
  12. New Posts on Instagram!
  13. If you went LIVE on Instagram you can also promote that

Those are just a few ways you can do it.
